Subject: Good to see you here!

Hello and welcome to the new ISO14000 discussion list. Since a number
of you have subscribed since the announcement went out this morning, I
thought it might be a good idea to suggest a way to get the ball
rolling in here.

How 'bout if you all introduce yourselves, tell a little about your
background, if any, in ISO14000 or its related areas, and what you
hope to find in this discussion list. Feel free to also ask any
questions or state any issues or problems you're currently having with
your job in relation to ISO14000. I'll start....:)

I'm Bill Casti. I own and maintain the QUALITY.ORG domain, homepage
and email discussion lists. In my "real life", I am a CQA and am
driving the ISO efforts, largely through design and implementation of
an Electronic Documentation system, of division of a multinational,
Japanese-owned telecommunications hardware company, from their sites
in Oregon and Virginia.

I know almost nothing about ISO 14000, since it's not directly
relevant or germane to our products or services. However, I'm always
curious and ready to learn about new efforts to improve quality
systems in every industry or field. So, mostly, I'm just hear to observe
and "sit at the feet of the masters", if there are any here.

I look forward to hearing from the rest of. Of course, if you have--or
have had--any problems or questions about the QUALITY.ORG domain
(which, by the way, is *not* owned or operated by ASQC, though we have
a cordial working relationship with ASQC), be sure to send me PRIVATE
email, and I'll see if I can help.

Regards.
Bill

FREE BULLETIN BOARD SERVICE!!

BBS ON-LINE to Access International Oil and Gas Standards News Release!

WHO
The Bulletin Board Service (BBS) is offered free of charge by Qualified
Specialists, Inc., a Houston- based quality management/consulting and
training firm. QSI specializes in international standardization with
the focus on the oil and gas industry.

WHEN
The free BBS can be accessed after October 1, 1995 at 713-444-7717. It
will feature the most up-to-date international standards developed by
ISO TC67. Six standards from Work Group 2, Certification Principles
for the Petroleum and Natural Gas Industry will be immediately
available.

WHAT
ISO TC (Technical Committee) 67 is responsible for the development of
standards for materials, services and equipment used in drilling
production, refining and transport by pipeline of petroleum and natural
gas. There are 7 subcommittees and an estimated 35 working groups
responsible for the development of approximately 100 industry
standards. Some of these standards are new while others are an
integration of domestic and international standard.

WHY-$$$$
Billions of dollars of losses every year in the Oil and Gas Industry
due to failures has spurred enough industry interest to work on some
real solutions. That's why these committees were formed within the ISO
structure. Concerns around the Globe for not only the loss of revenue,
but also loss of lives as well. Everything from off-shore rig designs
to drilling and production equipment are creatively addressed by world
experts in these standards.

HOW
The work groups have been creating these international standards for
over 3 years. And yet, no American organizations have disbursed this
important industry news! The BBS is simply one way of making this
vital information available to the Oil and Gas Industry and interested
parties.

Subject: ISO 14000 Definition Clarification

What exactly is the scope of the new ISO 14000 Standard?

This list is for addressing and discussing the" ISO 14000 certification
guidelines for Environmental and related industries". Does this mean that
ISO only provides guidelines for companies producing environmental products,
or does it provide guidelines for companies involved in creating environmental
polution as a by-product of its normal production processes?

Also, has the ISO 14000 standard been published? If not, what is the
estimated date of publication?

Thanks for your input,

Subject: Re: ISO 14000 Definition Clarification

The ISO 14000 documents are related to environmental management systems
(EMS) for any company that has processes affecting the environment. There
are over twenty documents in the ISO 14000 series.

The major document is ISO 14001, "Environmental Management Systems -
Specification with Guidance for Use". This (and its companion document, ISO
14004 on guidelines for the above) were approved as Draft International
Standards (DIS) on July 1, 1995 and issues as DIS on August 10, 1995.
Comments are due by February 10, 1996 and should be formally adopted as
International Standards in mid-1996. Guidlines relating to auditing are
on a similar schedule.

Any registration is done solely to ISO 14001.

Hope this helps.

The ISO 14000 standard covers standardization in the field of environmental
management tools and systems.

>Does this mean that
>ISO only provides guidelines for companies producing >environmental
products,
>or does it provide guidelines for companies involved in >creating
environmental

Actually, neither. ISO 14001 (the actual specification standard) mandates
base requirements for an environmental mangement system (EMS). It does not
set proformange targets or product criteria. Instead, it focuses on a
systems-based approach to dealing with environmental impacts.

The Draft Internation Standards are available from ANSI and other
orgainzations (email me for numbers). They have been availble for about a
month now. The documents available are ISO 14001, ISO 14004, ISO 14010, ISO
14011/1, ISO 14012. The first one is the specification document (to which
companies certify/register), the second is a guidance document, and the last
three cover environmental auditing.

Hello fans!

Seems like my ertwhile employer has reneged on giving me a contract to
bring them into Electronic Documentation and through ISO 9002
certification. As of today, I'm unemployed.

So, if you know of anyone--preferably in Northern VA, New England or
the Pacific Northwest--though all locations will be considered--who's
looking for someone conversant in both Quality and Electronic
communications and documentation, please point them to my personal
homepage. It contains links to my resume, references, other homepages
I've written, etc. It's located at:

	http://www.casti.com/casti/Bill.html

The "pure text" version is also accessible by ftp from:

I thank you for permitting this interruption to your email.

Regards.

I don't think there is any way to get them. The standards themselves are
copyrighted and ANSI holds it for the US. If you do find a way, please let
me know.

Only if you know someone who has a copy. Put it this way: if YOUR
livelihood depended on your selling what you wrote, would YOU be giving
away early drafts? The sale of documents is, in large measure, how ISO
supports itself, and why they are very justified in being highly
protective of their copyright. Call ANSI or ASQC (1-800-248-1946) and buy
a copy.
