Well....

I finally broke down and got a text-based pager for myself.
You'll can either key in a phone number or send an email-to-pager message.

The new number is 1-800-560-2189.
The email address is: 5602189@skytel.com

The old pager number will continue to work for me at least through
December 31st.

Regards.

sorry for cross postings!

this is a fascinating development. You can view their industry survey
forms that are used to determine how companies are rated on their
"sustainability". Needless to say one is likely to have strong opinions
about what the DJ's consultants think makes a firm sustainable.

Subject: Certification of one process within a plant

Greetings:

With regards to the ISO 14001, I wanted to know if it was possible to
certify only one part of the process within a plant (not the entire plant).

Very often in a plant, there are two or more processes (e.g. a metal
recycler has the melting operations as well as the rolling operations). The
melting operations as well as the rolling processes are independent of each
other inasmuch as the intermediate product is a tradable commodity. Hence,
the certification of the last processing stage would be the most critical as
the products from this process can then carry the certification mark.

While the above may be the most optimum from a company's view, presumably
there are other items which will need to be addressed, including the
expected influence of the manager and top management for the last process on
the other processes. There would also be some problem in the definition of
boundary limits.

I am interested to know if any company has attempted such a move and the
results.

Thanks for any comments you can provide.

Subject: RE: Certification of one process within a plant

ISO 14001 certification applies to an organization, not to a product, and
products are not permitted to carry a certification mark. Although the EMS
must address product environmental aspects, the certification is for the
management system. A unit of an organization may be certified as long as
it has its own structure and management ( i.e., a division of a larger
company). It is possible that a portion of a plant's operations may be
certified to ISO 14001 depending upon the organizational structure, but
this would need to be determined on an individual basis.

Hope this helps.

From: "Prof. Walter Leal Filho"
Subject: New book: Sustainability and University Life

Dear Colleagues,

A new publication titled "Sustainability and University Life" (edited
by Walter Leal Filho, 270pp.
US ISBN 0-8204-4367-0. European ISBN 3-631-35297-2) is now available.

The book has been prepared based on the fact that the international
debate on the merits of introducing sustainable approaches at
universities can be greatly assisted by means of examples illustrating
what can be done and, as importantly, how. There are many higher
education institutions which still see sustainability as "theoretical"
or disconnected to the reality, failing to recognise the institutional
benefits that may be brought about by pursuing sustainable development.

The book "Sustainability and University Life", as the title implies,
tries to show various ways via which sustainability may be brought
closer to a university´s routine. By means of critical analyses, case
studies and examples from North American, European and African
universities, the book not only discusses the problems faced with the
promotion of sustainability at institutional level, but also shows how
sustainability is being put into practice by a number of higher
education institutions. Be it via curriculum greening, networking,
energy-saving projects, awards or via special teaching programmes,
universities may gain a great deal by paying attention to sustainability

and the book leaves no doubt that even the most sceptical institutions
will see advantages in pursuing this path.

Published by Peter Lang Scientific Publishers (New York, Berlin, Bern,
Vienna), as Volume 5 of the "Environmental Education, Communication and

Hi Everyone,

Do you know of any food-related business (restaurant, hotel,
food-processor, etc) that is ISO14000-certified or registered, or
considering it?

I am especially interested if there are any airline catering units that
have considered the ISO standards in relation to their waste management,
water use, and energy use - ie. is there a standard for energy used per
meal produced, or water used per unit of dishwashing.

I have contacted ANSI, ISO, and the Standards Council of Canada. The
Globus Registry is still offline today (!)

Any ideas, leads, etc??

Thanks!

The construction industry in the UK is working on a guide for EMS
implementation in the constrcution industry. There are already some
construction companies certified to ISO 14001 in the UK and others are
working on it. Some case studies in the guide will reflect that experience.
This project is coordinated by CIRIA, the construction Industry Research

1) Were ther any U.S. or other nation's Environmental Protection Agency (or

development of ISO 14000?

2) Were there any environmental oriented government authorized agencies?

3) Is anyone aware of government incentives for companies to implement an
EMS
and become ISO14001 certified? I know the U.S. does not have much to speak
of, but apparently the Chinese government is encouraging certification. Are
there any other countries that are doing likewise?

Christine - I am new to this list but have been involved in an ISO
14001 implementation effort for the last several months. Speaking to
question 3, I suggest you will find some suitable "government incentives"
through Executive Orders (EO) that deal with energy conservation, recycling,
greening the government, prevention of smoking near building entrances,
waste prevention, federal acquisition, etc. The executive orders are on the
net in various places, try searching for Executive Order. I haven't seen
any reference in an executive order to ISO 14001, but if you look at this
from another perspective (especially if you are working on a government
facility), the EO's would fall under "Legal and Other Requirements", and
perhaps also under EMP's, targets, and objectives. Therefore the EO's
become part of your EMS. And, if you look at EO 13101 "Greening the
Government Through Waste Prevention, Recycling, and Federal Acquisition",
there are requirements for "Environmentally Preferable" products or
services. I would think that having an ISO 14001 registration might enable
non-government entities a claim for acquisition services.  In my opinion;
any comments?.

Does anyone know of a website (or other source of
information) listing the companies with 14001
certification in the US? I had found a site a year or so
ago but it seems to be no longer in operation.

Try the database available at www.qualitydigest.com website. Even
though they refer to it as ISO 9000/QS-9000 database, there is
information available for ISO 14000 registrants.

You can also try the www.iso14000.com website.

We started a list some time ago and offered to maintain it for free if
contributors could be found to notify us of new companies to be listed. That
didn't happen, so it's out of date.

The list still exists at

http://www.mindspring.com/~lbainc/manage.htm#US 14001

The offer still stands, so if members of this list are interested?

Hello Christine Henderson,

Not witstanding the nature of ISO14K or an EMS in your class. You must also ask
the very important question about how key data will be used. Information
management in my opinion is a critical component to any management system,
especially an environmental management one.

As you may be aware, every process involved in any operation has an information
(data creation) component. Therefore included in you search you must include a
question about the amount, type and source and destination of information. Who
will use and interpret and make decision on the nature of the data. Is the data
more or less than expected, does it identify a trend, can it be used to improve
processes, etc.

You must include a question about the information process. IT is a critical
aspect in every process and should be a major component in an environmental
management system for the enterprise.

Subject: Re[2]: several questions

   Re: Question 3
this response deals with drivers rather than incentives for ISO 14001
   implementation

One of the drivers for ISO 14001 implementation within federal
organizations is Public Law 104-113 (The Technology Transfer and
Advancement Act of 1990-something). It basically says that federal
organizations hafta use NCSs (National Consensus Standards) in their
operations, provided that appropriate standards do exist. ISO 14001 is
THE national consensus standard for environmental management systems
(note the "ANSI" designation on the US edition). The law requires the
agency heads to justify why they are using something other than an NCS
   each year.

Prior to this law being enacted, the US Dept. of Energy issued DOE Order
1300.2A, which basically said that DOE operations would use "consensus
technical standards," and that DOE would write its own standards if
   appropriate ones weren't there.

Any incentives will most likely come on a state-by-state basis (or maybe
EPA region-by-region). (EPA has said they like ISO 14000, but hasn't
yet said "if you register/implement, then we'll do .)

What we've seen here at Savanah River Site is not so much South Carolina
DHEC giving us something because we're registered; instead, because we
are doing some things well - which happens to bring us into conformance
with the standard - DHEC has been willing to explore some options on
self-monitoring and stuff like that. The benefit comes not so much from
having the piece of paper from a registrar, it comes from having in
place the system and doing the things the standard talks about. DHEC
had already recognized good performance on our part BEFORE we got
   registered.

ISO 14000 is still pretty new; as regulators are able to look at the
performance of companies with registered EMSs over time, they'll be able
to develop more confidence in the adequacy of 3rd-party audits and be
more willing to consider other enforcement/inspection options. (This
entire paragraph should be prefaced with "IMHO.")

We are seeing some movement in that direction in South Carolina. We
   hope it continues.

   RE: Question 1
EPA has been involved with TC 207 from the get-go. Mary McKiel and
others have played some pretty significant roles there. I think EPA
generally takes an interest in any technical standards that bear on
environmental matters (e.g., various ASTM standards, ASQ E-4, etc.).

DISCLAIMER: I do NOT claim to speak for any of the companies or
agencies at the Savannah River Site. The views expressed in this e-mail
are mine alone, and do not necessarily reflect those of my employer,
Westinghouse Savannah River Company, or anybody else.
